The LA International New Music Festival will feature exciting performances of numerous works by leading composers from the Pacific Rim, celebrating Los Angeles' role as the American gateway to Asia and Latin America. There will be west coast and Los Angeles premieres of music by composers from Japan, Cuba, Vietnam, Colombia, Costa Rica, Brazil, Uruguay and Mexico.
From Asia, Toshio Hosokawa's The Raven will receive its American and West Coast Premieres. The work will feature mezzo-soprano Laura Mercado-Wright, fresh from her Carnegie Hall debut. Set to texts from Edgar Allen Poe's famous work of the same name, you won't want to miss this stunning interplay of poetry and music from one of Japan's leading composers.
From Latin America, Gabriela Ortiz of Mexico will be in attendance for performances of three string quartets, including Baalkah, which features the Eclipse Quartet and soprano Ayana Haviv. She received Latin Grammy nominations recently for Southwest Chamber Music's most recent recording, Elegia, and her opera Unicamente La Verdad. These exciting works - Aroma Foliado, Baalkah, and Altar de Muertos - will be an unforgettable evening.
